Dunlop v Medd Racing Ltd and Racing Lines (GB) Ltd
High Court
17 January 2002
Robert Dunlop, a top motorcyclist, who suffered grievous multiple injuries in
a horrific June 1994 accident, was awarded £700,000 damages
and a judge's tribute for his outstanding courage. The
accident happened during the Isle of Man TT Rally
when the spokes on the rear wheel of his Honda RC45 fractured in the fourth of the six-lap race.
Damages were claimed from Medd Racing Ltd – his team at the time of the accident – and from Racing Lines (GB) Ltd, the company which supplied the defective wheel.Mr Dunlop
had sought up to £1.3 million damages for the lost chance of achieving his full potential on the world stage, but today settled his case for £700,000 on the third day of the trial.
Mr Justice Buckley said the agreement seemed a ‘fair and sensible settlement from both sides' points of view’.
